BASIC SAILING EQUIVALENCY COURSE
BASIC SAILING EQUIVALENCY COURSE - $300

1) open to people 16 and older;
2) must pass a swim test in a YMCA pool:
- stay afloat or tread water 5 minutes;
- swim 25 yards;
- don a lifepreserver while in the water.
3) must be a sailor with prior on-the-water experience.
Register and pay ($300) on the website (EVENT CALENDAR) for whichever day you want to begin Day 1 Activities;
Day 2 will be scheduled after you attend Day 1;
Register in EVENT CALENDAR for swim test on May 7, 2017 (no fee)
Day 1 - Orientation & On-the-Water
Orientation Session: Introduction to TASCA and Boathouse/Dock Procedures;
Receive TASCA Basic Sailing Course Booklet; Textbook; and Written Test;
On-the-water Lesson with a TASCA Instructor:
Rigging & De-rigging; Review of knowledge & skills to be tested on Day 2:
TOPICS: Knots, Rigging/De-rigging, Prepare to Sail, Boarding, Balance, Getting Underway, Wind Direction, Steering with tiller, Heading up, Falling off, Points of Sail, Tacking/Coming About, Jibing, Sail Trim, Safety Position, Sailing by the Lee, Awareness of Traffic, Rules of the Road, Overboard Recovery, Safety/First Aid, Approach to Mooring, Approach to Dock, De-Rigging.
Day 2 - Testing
Written Test; Knots Test; Boat Rigging/De-rigging Test; On-the-Water Sailing Proficiency Test (See Topics from Day 1);
Swim Test Certification;
For no additional fee, the Equivalency Course student has the option to participate in 4 additional on-the-water lessons, and to complete all testing requirements before the end of the session registered for (Spring, Summer or
Upon paying the $300 fee and passing all required tests of the Equivalency Course, you may apply to become a member of TASCA ($55 fee) and enroll in intermediate and advanced sailing courses.
